31 janvier 1961. Une fusée Mercury décolle de Cap Canaveral.
Dans la nacelle, l'astronaute est un chimpanzé de 3 ans et 7 mois nommé Ham.
Le jeune singe est propulsé dans la stratosphère, il résiste aux pressions et aux fortes températures avant de retomber dans l'Atlantique.
Il est alors le premier « terrien » à revenir vivant d'un voyage dans l'espace.
Ce film retrace l'incroyable itinéraire de ce chimpanzé né dans la forêt africaine et de Jeff, l'homme qui tout au long des deux années d'entraînement et de préparation va le soutenir et lui permettre de survivre.
Leur exploit ouvrira la voie des étoiles aux astronautes de la Nasa.

In the nacelle, the astronaut is a chimpanzee of 3 years and 7 months named Ham. The young monkey is propelled in the stratosphere, he resists to the pressures and to the strong temperatures before falling again in the Atlantic Ocean.
He is then the first "earthling" to came back alive from a travel in the space.
This film redraws the incredible route of this chimpanzee born in the African forest and Jeff, the man who throughout two years of training and preparation is going to support him and to allow him to survive.
Their exploit will open the way of stars to the astronauts of the Nasa.
