Discussion Scanners?
Q
Why is Scanners (1980) rated R? PLEASE GIVE ME SPECIFIC SCENES FROM THE MOVIE!!!?
My son wants to see this very badly and I can't bring myself to watch it first (I'm not big on scary movies) and he has been asking me to see this for years now. Is there anything REALLY bad or gory in it that he shouldn't be seeing yet?
A
Best AnswerScanners was and is a great scifi movie. It's about a scientist/doctor dad that used an experimental drug on pregnant mom's that had the effect of giving the unborn child incredible psychokinetic powers. These children grew up to be misunderstood nor did they also understand what was happening. Michael Ironside plays the villain and probably the most powerful of these children, and seeks to gather them all to him or destroy them one by one. His goal is to find the one child that may challenge him, his brother if I remember correctly. The R rating is not appropriate by today's standards I think. The only scene I can think of is from the very beginning where there is a conference discussing the possibility of psychic powers in humans. A man who claims to be a yoga master asks for a volunteer. Michael Ironside (who else!) agrees to be the guinea pig and Ironside proceeds to push the gurus heart beating so fast his head literally explodes on screen. It was a great special effect in its day but tame by comparison to today. There is a similar scene at the end where the antagonist and protagonist do battle to the death with the loser's body spontaneously combusting. Again tame by today's standard but great in it's day. The real question is just what YOUR limit is. If you don't mind some mild violence like I described it's ok. It is a horror/scifi so it's par for the course. If he's at least 12 I can't see the harm. It's mild in comparison to any Halloween or Friday the 13th or Scary movie episode. If you've allowed him to see anything on that level Scanner would be tame.

A. In one scene, a guy's head, all of a sudden, explodes!
A. Yes, several people's heads literally exploding on screen. Very cool special effects at the time it was made. Very graphic and gory. Not intended for a young audience.
A. yeah, exploding heads, lots of blood. If your son is under 15, I don't think i'd let him see it...

A. scannerrs is a movie that some people have powerfull minds and abilites. they can read and hear what is going on in peoples minds. so they are called "scanners" they scann a person hearing their thoughts . the person scanned gets a nose bleed every time this is how we know he has been scanned
one character was becoming crazy because he could not
"silence" all the "noise" in his head, he only found releief when a doctor gave him some experimental drug to "supress" the abilities then he was all right
one character used this abilities for murdering people
there was a scene close to the begining where a person is on stage showing proof that he had these abilities.
but unbeknown to him there was the bad guy (michael ironside) "he was the killer in the movie" he was really strong
and when the person on stage was scanning a volunteer from the audience, ironside scanned him with such force and strength that it blew the scanner on stage head off
the movie shows the head exploding
and that is really the worst the movie has to offer
i have this movie at home it is a classic
and i would recomend that you and your kid see it together
or you may want to watch it first to check the content out before hand
it is not a scary movie at all, but it does have sa head exploding and a lot of nose bleeds and a lot of the good scanners get scanned to death by the bad scanner.
the movie climaxes at end when the good character has a "scanner" fight with (ironside) the bad scanner both of thenm turn red in the face and their veins pop out
and you can hear the heart beats becoming faster and louder
the good guy prevails at end but they scanned each other so hard that the good guys body some how deteriorates and he kills the bad scanner but some how he scanns his mind into ironside (the bad scanners) body, so at end you seen ironsides face but hear the good guys voice
it really depends how old your child is if he is a teen i think it would be ok. look at if first then make a choice.
good luck to you and have a nice day
god bless
