In This Boy`s Life, his ability to harness difficult characters was revealed and DiCaprio became an industry standard. Critically acclaimed performances in Total Eclipse, What`s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries and Romeo + Juliet soon followed. It was after the 1997 James Cameron epic Titanic that DiCaprio reached true superstar status. As Jack Dawson, opposite Kate Winslet, DiCaprio was part of the highest grossing movie ever made. DiCaprio has since been in Catch Me if You Can, Gangs of New York and Blood Diamond. He won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in The Aviator and was nominated for his performance in The Departed.
