Donna Karan got her start in the fashion industry working for Anne Klein during the summer after her sophomore year at Parsons School of Design, an experience that would shape her future career and lifestyle choices. At Anne Klein, Karan continued for three years as associate designer and was named Klein's successor following her death in 1974. With the help of Anne Klein's financial backers, Karan launched the first Donna Karan New York Collection in 1985. The label revolves around chic, functional simplicity. Karan's trademark designs include black cashmere, leather, jersey stretch, and molded fabrics. She has been honored with CFDA awards six times, is a member of its board of directors, and sits on the board of several New York.based arts and wellness charities.
